Born into an immigrant family of Queens, in New York, she was lovingly nicknamed "Eszti", short for the Hungarian "Eszter", which gave her the peculiar accent to her definitive name. The young “Esty” entered the world of beauty thanks to her chemist uncle who taught her how to make and apply facial creams. When she launched her own skincare company with her husband in 1946, she took her married surname and added an accent to her own name to make it sound French: Estée Lauder was born. With great skill, she was able to create an aura of aristocratic glamour for herself, which would soon permeate her own brand. An excellent saleswoman and tenacious entrepreneur, she herself applied her creams in her usual demonstrations in the most exclusive shops of Manhattan. This personalised treatment with her clients, which she always wanted to preserve, triggered the "word of mouth" that led to her success.

Estée was not only a pioneer in becoming a businesswoman at a time when women only dared to dream of a domestic life. In 1953 she revolutionised the cosmetics industry by creating her famous "Youth-Dew". With 50,000 bottles sold in the first year, it was the first scented shower oil that forever changed the perfume culture of her time. At last women were no longer dependent on a man to give them an expensive French perfume to wear a few drops in special occasions only. Now they could perfume themselves as much as they wanted as part of their daily bathing routine.
This pragmatic and commercial approach, nurtured by her charisma and manifested in the quality and innovation of her products, powered the explosive growth of her brand. From a family business to the philanthropically dynasty that is now publicly traded, Estée Lauder continues to add brands and licenses in an unstoppable evolution, with sales in more than 150 countries.
